The colour authorities at the Pantone Color Institute have just made history: for 2026 they’ve chosen Cloud Dancer (PANTONE 11-4201) — a delicate, airy white — marking the first time ever a shade of white has been named Colour of the Year.

As a Personal Stylist and Colour Consultant in Geneva, Switzerland, you might be surprised to learn that I am absolutely delighted with this choice of “colour” for 2026. Cloud Dancer, or Soft White, is exactly what you need in your wardrobe to bring your outfits together. The important part is always to get the right shade for your colouring type worn in the right contrast level (with contrast: high intensity vs without contrast: tonal).
Embrace soft, tonal layering
White doesn’t have to be stark or summer-only. For winter, the subtle softness of Cloud Dancer is perfect for tonal layering: think ivory cashmere coat over a cream-white Fair Isle sweater or a soft off-white turtleneck under a white wool blazer. The result? A chic, monochrome look that feels warm, modern — and effortlessly luxe.
This type of colour combination works for you if you’re a Soft dominant colouring type or if you have little contrast between your hair, eyes and skin tone.
Use contrast for sophistication
White-on-white can be dreamy, but pairing Cloud Dancer with darker tones (charcoal, navy, deep forest green) or natural materials (camel, taupe, stone grey) creates elegant contrast and structure. For example: a Cloud Dancer coat with charcoal trousers, or a white knit with a camel skirt and leather boots.
This type of colour combination will look incredible if you have high intensity and contrast in your colouring type, for example if you are a Clear dominant colouring type.
Add texture and pattern — especially festive Fair Isle
This is where the magic happens. A fair-isle jumper in off-white, cream or soft ivory — especially one with delicate patterning — becomes the perfect winter essential. The softness of Cloud Dancer gives space for the pattern to breathe, while the knit’s texture keeps the look cozy and rich.
If you’ve got a warm undertone, you’ll need to look for fair isle patterns that include colours such as camel, brown or even red.
If you’ve got a cool undertone, you’d be best with a fair isle jumper with black, grey or blue patterns.
Choosing the “Right” White for Your Skin Undertone

Here’s how to choose wisely — especially if you want to lean into the Cloud Dancer trend.
If you have a Cool - pink/rosy - undertone:
• you’ll need crisp, clean whites or soft whites with cool undertones; avoid yellowish or creamy whites that make skin look sallow.
• use whites with a subtle bluish or neutral base (leaning slightly towards “milky” whites rather than “ivory”).
Cloud Dancer’s balance makes it ideal — pair with charcoal, navy, or jewel-toned accessories for clarity and contrast.
If you’ve have a Warm - golden/olive - undertone, you’ll need:
• creamy whites — ivory, off-white, soft “winter bone” — that complement skin’s warmth.
• Cloud Dancer usually leans slightly warm-neutral, so it can work well; to play up warmth, layer with beige, camel, brown or warm taupe.
If you’ve have rather a Neutral / Mixed undertone, you’ll need:
• both cool-leaning and warm-leaning whites can work — depending on the styling and combination.
• Use Cloud Dancer as a base and adjust surrounding colours (e.g., accessories, outerwear) based on the overall look — soft pastels for a dreamy vibe, earthy neutrals for a classic winter palette.
Styling Ideas for Holiday Season
Winter is the time when knitwear — especially festive, patterned knits — feels right at home.
Here’s how to style Fair Isle or patterned off-white pieces in the spirit of Cloud Dancer:
Neutral Fair Isle & soft ivory — great for those with warm or neutral undertones; pairs wonderfully with camel or soft taupe coats, leather boots in warm brown, and a cosy felt hat in camel.
Cool-toned white fair-isles (ivory + grey / charcoal pattern) — lovely on cool-toned complexions; wear with charcoal trousers or navy paperbag-waist pants and simple silver jewellery for a contemporary, minimal look.
Tonal layering + texture mixing — combine a fair-isle with an off-white cable-knit scarf or knit hat; add a boucle or wool coat in “greige” (grey-beige) for a soft, textural, modern “winter white” outfit.
Festive outfits — an off-white fair-isle sweater + dark wool skirt or trousers + knee-high leather boots + a bold pendant necklace or coloured bag (burgundy, deep green) — this grounds the lightness of the white with a festive yet classic touch.

The choice of Cloud Dancer marks a turning point. As the world seems increasingly cluttered — visually, digitally, emotionally — white offers a kind of reset. According to Pantone, this shade is more than “just white”: it’s a quiet, restful backdrop for creativity, clarity, and calm.
For your wardrobe, it’s a call to simplify — to invest in timeless pieces that transcend seasons, and to lean into softness, intention, and versatility.
So this winter, consider letting white — not as a bright statement, but as a soft whisper — carry your style.
