There is no right or wrong when it comes to Personal Style because each individual is unique and so it goes without saying that your personal style will be as unique as you are. As a Personal Stylist in Switzerland, I know from my clients (and from my own experience too ;-)) that it can however be a challenge to determine what your Personal Style actually is, especially if you've never really thought about before!
You may be wondering why Your Personal Style is so important, so let me tell you :-)
Personal Branding
You’ve likely heard of Personal Branding before, a phrase coined by Tom Peters in 1997, in his article “A Brand Called You”. His work centered around the premise that “everyone has a chance to stand out” and to become a “brand worthy of remark”. He was referring to our career in general.
I would go far beyond Tom Peter’s work and go so far as to say that Personal Branding is relevant to all facets of your life whether that’s personal or professional.
Your Personal Brand
Personal Branding is, to me, the perpetual communication of your individual values in an authentic and intentional manner.
Perpetual: the image that you portray to the world is never static and evolves over time as you grow and develop.
Communication: a means of conveying who you are through what you do and what you choose not to do.
Individual: embracing your individuality and demonstrating your distinguishing traits.
Values: an opportunity to self-reflect and consider the values that are most important to you.
Authentic: alignment with your genuine self creates clarity and differentiates you from others.
Intentional: an invitation to carefully consider what you want to be known for and how you would like others to perceive you.
How can you influence your Personal Branding?
There are many ways that you can influence your personal branding.
If a first impression is made in 7 seconds, your appearance becomes an extension of who you are. It’s your way of communicating your unique value in this world, supporting yourself to achieve your goals with intention, without having to utter a word.
If a corporate brand is the promise of the value you’ll receive, your personal brand is the promise of the value you bring to your friends, family, loved ones, colleagues, and anyone else who you may interact with. It is your responsibility to showcase your value to the outside world. Even if you don't always feel 100% confident, by understanding your own values and knowing how to express them with what you say and do (or what you choose not to say or do) as well as how you present yourself to the world, you will be in a much better position to showcase your own unique value.
